Macintosh users recognize iMovie as the video application that you can get for free when you purchase a new Mac. Also available as an iOS app, you can start editing on your iPhone or iPad and finish on your Mac. iMove is a fully featured video editor that uses a drag-and-drop user interface with special effects such as the Ken Burns effect.

Windows Movie Maker

Formerly known as Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows Movie Maker is a video production tool that Microsoft makes freely available for Windows computers. It is part of the Windows Essentials suite that also includes Photo Gallery, Mail, Writer, and OneDrive. The latest version of Windows Movie Maker produces video in the H.264 format. New features include video stabilization, waveform visualization, narration tracks, audio emphasizing, and enhanced text effects.

Available in both Windows and Macintosh versions, Camtasia is a video and audio editor for producing professional videos. Rich in special effects including callouts, pan & zoom, and automatic noise reduction, Camtasia lets you drag and drop clips onto a multi-track timeline that expands to fit your project. There is a so-called green screen feature that lets you remove the background color of any video and layer it on top of the recording to put yourself, for example, into the video. Camtasia also includes a powerful screen capture tool that can record video and/or audio. Insofar as pricing goes, Camtasia is not free.
