After completing this chapter, you will know how to:

• Consider the potentially negative impact of multimedia involving violence, game addiction, sexual exploitation, pornography, and obscenity
• Understand the extent to which cyberbullying happens via social media
• Recognize the cultural impact of fake news upon socially constructed democracies
• Explain how the V-chip works in conjunction with TV Parental Guidelines
• Understand the regulatory nightmare facing lawmakers on issues of privacy, encryption, censorship, and protectionism
• Realize how fortune seekers have tried to profit from the legal system’s lack of experience by patenting basic multimedia technologies that were already widely used
• Balance the copyright law with a teacher’s right to fair use of multimedia
• Use good judgment in deciding what is a fair use, and what requires copyright clearance, when downloading resources from the Internet
• Understand the issues of entitlement, equity, cost, usability, and universal access, and then question whether the Information Superhighway is creating a technological underclass in our society
