Tips For Safe Use Of Microwave Ovens

  1. Always follow the manufacturer’s instruction manual and the safety precautions for your oven model.
  2. Do not attempt to operate the oven with the door open since open-door operation can result in harmful exposure to microwave energy. It is important not to defeat or tamper with the safety interlocks.
  3. Do not operate the oven if it is damaged. It is particularly important that the oven door close properly and there is no damage to the: (1) door (bent), (2) hinges and latches (broken or loosened), (3) door seals and sealing surfaces, (4) netting on the door window.
  4. Do not place any object between the oven front face and the door. Do not allow cooking residue to accumulate on the door seal surfaces. Clean door, seal, and oven cavity periodically with mild detergent and water, never an abrasive cleaner.
  5. Do not use the oven to dry or disinfect clothing or other items because of the risk of fire. Stay nearby the oven when microwaving popcorn.
  6. Always supervise a child’s use of the microwave oven.
  7. Exercise care when removing food from the oven. Food cooked in the microwave can be extremely HOT even though the food container may feel cool.
  8. Do not operate an empty oven. In some ovens the oven’s magnetron can be damaged. Only use non-metallic, microwave-safe cookware in the microwave oven.
  9. Only use plastic containers specifically designed for use in a microwave oven. Plastic film should not touch the food during cooking.
  10. It is not recommended that the microwave oven be used in home canning.
  11. Microwave ovens should only be adjusted or repaired by properly qualified service personnel.
