Job Hazard Analysis For Lab NTDT 421

Urine-Lab:

Picric Acid---Danger---Toxic, explosive, friction-and-shock sensitive!

NaOH---Skin and eye irritant!

  • Wear gloves, goggles, lab-coat while mixing chemicals!
  • Work under the fume hood while pouring and mixing picric acid!
  1. Unscrew picric acid cap carefully. Wipe inside of cap and threads on bottle with water if dried material has formed.
  2. Measure out required amount using a volumetric cylinder. Be careful not to over-pour containers. Use a small glass pipette for small volumes. Mix picric acid with NaOH solution according to desired amount. Picric acid + NaOH =alkaline picric acid.
  3. Store measured picric acid covered under the fume hood until ready to use. Do not let picric acid dry out!
  4. Handle with care to not spill picric acid solutions.
  5. After lab experiment, pour all picric acid solutions into a glass bottle with a cap, making sure it is a glass cap.
  6. Label glass container with orange safety label and call the Department of Environmental Health & Safety at # 831-8475 for pick-up of chemical waste.
  7. Under no circumstances is it allowed to pour picric acid down the sink!
