Special programs -- International Teaching Assistants

This summer, ELI welcomed 79 international graduate students as part of the International Teaching Assistants (ITA) program, coordinated by ELI associate director Joe Matterer and Ken Hyde. The students received training in August based on their needs, ranging from private tutoring in pronunciation to experiential teacher training to drama-based classes designed to enhance oral fluency. Teachers Nonie Bell, Dave Cassling, Leslie Criston, Kristen Helland, Ken Hyde, Rider Marshall, Sandy Nickel, Jennifer Robinson and Laura Spinu helped prepare students to teach at the University of Delaware.

At the end of the program, 34 students qualified to teach courses of their own. The remaining students qualified for other TA assignments or research assistantships.
