Teacher training in South Korea

ELI staff traveled to Hyundai Learning Center near Seoul, South Korea, to train 160 English teachers in January. |
For the second year in a row, ELI took its teacher training program on the road, traveling to Yongin, South Korea, for an in-service “Winter Camp” training program for elementary and secondary English teachers sponsored by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. From January 3 to January 26, five ELI faculty and staff members (Director Scott Stevens, Associate Director Joe Matterer, Assistant Director Deborah Detzel, and instructors Janice Lefebvre and Grant Wolf) traveled to Korea to present a series of workshops on current methods of teaching English as a foreign language.
Despite the chilly Korean winter winds, ELI faculty and staff were warmed by the unflagging enthusiasm and remarkable dedication of the 160 Korean teachers, who gave up their vacation time for the highly intensive English-only training camp, held at the Hyundai Training Center located in a rural area outside of Seoul. Judging by the high language proficiency and exceptional teaching skills of the Korean teachers, the future of Korean English education is in excellent hands. • GW
