New teacher training program

ELI has received a $429,988 grant from the U.S. Department of State to fund a new one-year special project to train Moroccan and Jordanian secondary school English teachers. Twelve teachers from each country will receive advanced training in language and pedagogy for six weeks in the summer of 2004.

“ELI hopes to build on its experience and success with previous Algerian and Egyptian teacher training projects in order to have a positive impact on the English teaching profession in the Middle East and North Africa,” said ELI director Dr. Scott Stevens.

The specific office within the State Department sponsoring the project is the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program. When the graduates return to their home countries, they will work with the Fulbright Commissions in Morocco and Jordan to develop and administer national conferences in which they will share the knowledge of new materials and teaching techniques gained at ELI with English teachers from across their nations.
