Volunteer marshals helped Commencement run smoothly

1:25 p.m., June 6, 2003--“We almost couldn’t have Commencement without volunteer marshals—they are indispensable and immensely important!” said Nancy Millard, coordinator of alumni relations, who has organized the marshals for two years.

Approximately 70 volunteers, mostly professional and salaried staff members and about 15 students, served as marshals and kept UD’s 154th Spring Commencement activities running smoothly May 31.

Wearing distinctive gold “Marshal” sashes with blue lettering, half the marshals helped seat guests, especially those with special needs, passed out programs and staffed the information tables. Others organized the procession and helped seat degree candidates and alumni delegates.

There also were seven faculty marshals in academic regalia, who led the alumni delegates, graduate and platform party processionals. This year, they were Joan Couch, assistant professor of health and exercise sciences; Araya Debessay, professor of accounting and management information systems; Keith Handling and James Kent, both associate professors of health and exercise sciences; Evelyn Hayes, professor of nursing; Mary Ann Hitchens, senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics; and Kathie Troutman, associate director of Information Technologies-University Media Services.
