6:00 p.m., May 31, 2003--Alumni representing classes of the 1940s through 2002 opened the Universitys 154th Commencement ceremony May 31 by processing into Delaware Stadium to the applause of UDs newest graduates. This years procession included 28 who are parents and two who are grandparents of graduating seniors, 13 members of the 50th reunion class of 1953 and Matthew Huenerfauth, the 2001 graduate who received a Mitchell Scholarship, named after the Commencement speaker. With the Class of 2003, the number of living UD alumni is in excess of 120,000.
Leading the alumni procession were this years recipients of the Alumni Associations Warner and Taylor awards, which recognize the outstanding senior women and man. These graduating seniors are Julia Kohen and Michael Bogucki.

Commencement was definitely a family affair for the ONeills. Participating as alumni delegates are Jack ONeill (center), assistant professor of health and exercise sciences, representing the Class of 1969; his wife, Eileen (left), representing the Class of 1976); daughter, Erin (second from left), representing the Class of 2000; and daughter, Colleen ONeill Van Dyke (right), representing the Class of 1990. Also celebrating the day is daughter, Katie ONeill,who received her degree at Commencement. |
