Alumni return to help celebrate Commencement

6:00 p.m., May 31, 2003--Alumni representing classes of the 1940s through 2002 opened the University’s 154th Commencement ceremony May 31 by processing into Delaware Stadium to the applause of UD’s newest graduates. This year’s procession included 28 who are parents and two who are grandparents of graduating seniors, 13 members of the 50th reunion class of 1953 and Matthew Huenerfauth, the 2001 graduate who received a Mitchell Scholarship, named after the Commencement speaker. With the Class of 2003, the number of living UD alumni is in excess of 120,000.

Leading the alumni procession were this year’s recipients of the Alumni Association’s Warner and Taylor awards, which recognize the outstanding senior women and man. These graduating seniors are Julia Kohen and Michael Bogucki.

All in the family
Commencement was definitely a family affair for the O’Neills. Participating as alumni delegates are Jack O’Neill (center), assistant professor of health and exercise sciences, representing the Class of 1969; his wife, Eileen (left), representing the Class of 1976); daughter, Erin (second from left), representing the Class of 2000; and daughter, Colleen O’Neill Van Dyke (right), representing the Class of 1990. Also celebrating the day is daughter, Katie O’Neill, who received her degree at Commencement.
