Senior class raises more than $13,000 for gift to UD

Todd Macbeth and Sarah Lyman, co-chairs of the 2003 Senior Class Gift Committee

6:00 p.m., May 31, 2003--At the University of Delaware’s 154th Commencement May 31, the senior class donated more than $13,600 toward a memorial at the University in memory of the lives lost in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Last year, the Class of 2002 dedicated its gift to create a memorial on the South Mall near Memorial Hall, where the Ribbon Garden stood in the days after the tragedies.

The gift was announced by Sarah Lyman and Todd Macbeth, who co-chaired the 2003 senior class gift committee.

Macbeth said to reach its goal of $10,000, the committee members spoke to many student organizations and sent letters to both parents and students. “Not only was our goal to raise money toward the gift but also to raise awareness of the importance of giving back to the University,” he said.

Noting that the committee exceeded the original goal, Lyman said, “It is evident that the senior class is thankful for all of the opportunities that the University of Delaware has given to them because, as of today, we have received more than 512 donations for a total gift of over $13,670.”

In accepting the gift, UD President David P. Roselle said, “We are grateful for your demonstration of loyalty and, as our about-to-be newest alumni of the University of Delaware, you should feel very proud indeed.”
