Three students recognized for special academic achievement

6:00 p.m., May 31, 2003--Three members of the University of Delaware Class of 2003 were recognized for achieving the highest cumulative grade index—4.0—in full-time study for a baccalaureate degree at the University during Commencement May 31.

Recognized at the ceremony by Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner, a member of UD’s Board of Trustees, were Karen Brown, Matthew Buckley and Christopher Eller.

Brown, a returning adult student from Wilmington, is receiving a degree in elementary teacher education. After graduation, she plans to teach middle-school mathematics in Delaware. With her today is her husband, Gary, and her daughter, Julie, a senior at UD.

Buckley, the son of UD alumni James and Gemma Buckley of Wilmington, is receiving a degree in civil engineering. After graduation, he will be getting married July 26 to fellow UD graduate Nicole Bahr and then will continue his graduate studies in transportation engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. Michael’s sister, Jennifer, also received this special recognition when she was graduated in 2001.

Eller, the son of Paul and Anna Mae Eller of Conowingo, Md., is receiving an honors bachelor’s degree in biochemistry with distinction. After graduation, he will be volunteering in Zambia this summer before attending the University of Virginia School of Medicine in the fall.
