Community cluster update
With the recent announcement that the University will use Penguin as the vendor for UD’s next High Performance Computing (HPC) community cluster, the IT Research Computing group is actively recruiting researchers to join the UD HPC community.
To learn more or to express interest in purchasing HPC resources, contact it-hpc-interest@udel.edu or attend the Feb. 28 HPC Symposium. This design and policies document provides additional details about the design of the next UD HPC community cluster.
HPC training
IT Research Computing staff offered an online Unix Basics workshop on January 30 and 31 using materials inspired by Software Carpentry for the Unix Shell. Topics included the following: introducing the shell, navigating files and directories, working with files and directories, pipes and filters, loops, shell scripts, and finding things. An updated list of training events, topics, and dates is available at the Research Computing website.
On March 6, the HPC team will be hosting the XSEDE HPC workshop: GPU Programming Using OpenACC. OpenACC is the accepted standard using compiler directives to allow quick development of GPU capable code using standard languages and compilers. (Learn more and register.)
If you would like to schedule a custom training session for your research group, or if you would like to suggest a topic for future training sessions, submit an HPC Request Form.
HPC Symposium series
- February 2018: The first High Performance Computing Symposium session of 2018 will be at the Faculty Commons on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 10:00 a.m. The event will kick off with a presentation by Adam Wallace, assistant professor of Geological Sciences, followed by a special announcement from IT Research Computing staff, and an open forum for attendees to ask questions and share ideas. (Register)
- Schedule and format change: The HPC team has changed the format of the HPC Symposium series. Meetings will now occur on the fourth Wednesday of February, June, and September. In addition, the June symposium will now be a poster session for research groups to highlight their current research and how they are using cluster computing locally or nationally. Registration is open for unfilled poster slots.
The symposium series is designed for researchers using or interested in using the University’s HPC clusters. Those interested in presenting at a future HPC Symposium should contact it-hpc-interest@udel.edu.
GIS events
- GIS Day provides an international forum for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) users to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in society. On Nov. 16, IT Client Support & Services (IT-CS&S); University Library, Museums and Press; Department of Geography; Center for Applied Demographics and Public Services; Delaware Geological Survey; Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering; City of Newark; Department of Earth, Ocean and Environment; and Water Resources Center collaborated to celebrate GIS Day on campus. The event consisted of a series of ten-minute presentations that covered topics from open data to accessibility and concluded with a poster session of GIS-related research from UD participants.
- IT-CS&S continues to host the UD GIS Coffee Hour for UD and the surrounding community. In December, Derek Law from Esri presented "Which Esri app to use?" to highlight the different ESRI applications available to the UD community. In February, David Black, GIS coordinator for the Cecil County Government, presented “Using ArcGIS Collector for Asset Management.”
