Performance of venipuncture Skin puncture from needle Use care removing needle cover.
Carefully insert needle into patient's skin.
Removal of needle from venipuncture site Blood aerosol Remove tourniquet prior to removing needle from patient.
Skin puncture Carefully remove needle from patient.
Do not recap needle
Keep sharps container is near the patient.
Waste clean-up Skin puncture Carefully place needle into sharps container.
Potentially infectious waste Dispose of waste in biohazard bag.
Label tubes Tube breakage Carefully handle glass tubes.
Spill clean-up Potentially infectious waste Apply generous amount of disinfectant (e.g. bleach).
Skin puncture from broken glass Do not directly handle broken glass, use paper towels or broom & dustpan
Contact with disinfectant Use disinfectant properly and do not allow it to contact mucous membranes.
