    Distance Learning

There are a variety of distance learning course formats from which to choose. Please note the course format included in the course listings in the following pages. Most courses require proctored exams which you can schedule at a location convenient to your home or office. Course requirements for UD Online credit students are the same as those for resident campus students.

    1. INTERNET

    Web-based

Web-based courses are developed and delivered entirely on the Internet. Course syllabi and assignments are posted on the Web. Students communicate with faculty and classmates using electronic mail, newsgroups, and/or chatrooms. In some courses, a CD-ROM supplements the Internet course material. Students need a WindowsTM or Macintosh computer and an Internet connection.

    Web-classroom

Videostreaming and synchronized PowerPoint presentations on the Web allow students to see and hear actual faculty lectures, review notes, and link to related resources online. These lectures are stored on the University's computers and may be accessed throughout the semester. A more powerful computer and higher speed Internet connection may be required for optimum course access. For details, please visit www.udel.edu/ce/tech.html.

    Web-Classroom Demonstrations Available

It is necessary for you to test your computer equipment and Internet connection in order to ensure your accessibility.

Web-classroom demonstrations are located at www.udel.edu/UMS/itv/demo/. Please note that if you are taking a math, economics or engineering course, high speed Internet connection is required. In order to test your connection, you will need to select a Math, Economics, or Engineering course listed at the above website.

    Live Web-classroom

A limited number of graduate engineering classes are available "live" on the Web through videostreaming. Students view the class in "real time," allowing for active participation in the campus classroom. Students follow the University on-campus schedule. Requirements include high speed Internet access such as ISDN, T-1, or Ethernet connection.

    New Course Format
    2. CD-ROM

The CD-ROM format is similar to the Web-classroom format, but offers students the choice of using a CD-ROM disk rather than relying on an Internet connection to access the course lectures. Please note that access to the Internet is still required, as supplemental course materials, resource links, e-mail and Web based assignments may be required by the instructor. Students return the CD-ROM disk at the end of the semester. Minimum requirement: 4x CD-ROM drive.

    3. VIDEOTAPE

Courses offered by University faculty are taught in specially-equipped video classrooms. Each lecture is videotaped in an unedited fashion and tapes are shipped to students at their work site or home. Students return tapes at the end of the semester.

    4. WEB-ENHANCED VIDEOTAPE

Videotaped courses are augmented with Web assignments, class notes, and student/faculty on-line interaction using electronic mail, newsgroups, and/or chatrooms. Internet access is required.

    5. PRINT-BASED

A hardcopy study guide or manual is the student's guide to reading assignments and preparing and submitting work to the faculty coordinator. Internet access is not required.

    6. INTERACTIVE VIDEO

Interactive video technology connects the University's Newark campus with selected sites throughout the state of Delaware. This format provides two-way video and two-way audio between the sites. The regular University academic calendar applies to interactive courses.

    Bridging the Distance:
    1-800-597-1444

The University of Delaware maintains a toll-free telephone number, 1-800-597-1444 (long distance only), to help you interact with faculty, advisors, and the academic and administrative departments at the University. See the back of the handbook for a list of local University phone numbers where you can receive assistance. Faculty members are available to help you with questions regarding assignments or lectures. Your course syllabus will tell you the best time to reach your instructor. The UD Online office will help with questions on registration, videotapes, and other logistical issues. Visit our web-site at www.udel.edu/ce/udonline/index.shtml (Please note that UD Online students make any registration changes through the UD Online office. These changes (drops, withdrawals, course credits, etc.) may not be done on-line or with UD Phone. Please call 302/831-1079 for assistance.)

    Course Materials

After registering and before classes begin, you will be sent your course syllabus (for most non-nursing courses), book order form, and any handouts supplied for distribution by your instructor. For some courses, especially Nursing courses, the syllabus is purchased through the bookstore. Please read these materials before your class begins. It is important that you understand the requirements and expectations of the class as described in the syllabus. If you have any questions, please call the UD Online office at 302/831-3151 or 1-800-597-1444 (long distance only).

    Ordering Books

The University of Delaware Bookstore has revised the UD Online book ordering procedures to give you faster service and the option of selecting used books when available. You may order your textbooks using the new on-line service at www.udel.edu/bookstore or by using the book order form provided to you by the UD Online office to call, fax or mail your order to the Bookstore.
