Ode to tutors

The Tutoring Center provides full time ELI students with two hours of individual, or “one-on-one,” instruction per week. Here veteran tutor Dave Cassling [see his profile] expresses the feelings of all tutors, who enjoy the close contact with their always-interesting students.

'Twas the night before session,
We thought with elation
of all the new students,
from ev-er-y nation.

Each session we tutors
have only one wish:
to meet our new students
and teach them English.

Though we come from crazed backgrounds
like teachers and singers
and actors and bankers,
and right and left-wingers,

We like dealing with people
just one-on-one
by helping them study
or just having fun

With word games and Scrabble
if time permits
or discussions of culture
or historical bits.

Tutors have talents
across a broad front,
they use for a student’s
en-light-en-ment.

The tutor fields queries
about daily life,
like how to rent cars
or stop roommate strife.

Tutors in common
when all’s said and done
love working with students
just one-on-one!
