Diversity in Academic Programs

African Studies

The African Studies program at the University of Delaware was founded in 1992 with the aim of providing an intellectually coherent program of study based on regularly offered courses in a few disciplines. Over the years, the program has grown to encompass faculty and students from several different departments in the humanities and social sciences. The program offers an 18-credit minor and supports Winter Session programs in a few countries in Africa.

Black American Studies

Black American Studies (BAMS) is a multidisciplinary program with basic course and program content in the social sciences and humanities. BAMS offers a 31-credit major and 18-credit minor. The BAMS curriculum surveys the historic, cultural and social phenomena of people of African descent in America and throughout the Diaspora, and provides students with individualized, in-depth learning experiences. In addition to the major, students take Black American Studies courses to fulfill general University requirements.

East Asian Studies Program

The East Asian Studies Program offers a B.A. and a B.A. with Honors, a minor with language, and a minor without language. Students may concentrate on China, Japan or Southeast Asia. The B.A. and the B.A. with Honors in East Asian Studies prepare undergraduate students as East Asian Studies specialists. They provide students with training in the history, political institutions, culture and the language of a particular East Asian country (e.g., China or Japan) in a general East Asian context.

Islamic Studies

The demand for courses on Islam and the Muslim world on campus is already evident in the University’s course offerings which constitute the Islamic studies course spectrum. Indeed, there are at least 20 courses offered or proposed by faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences in which students in an Islamic Studies minor could enroll to meet the suggested requirements.

Jewish Studies

The Jewish Studies Program at the University of Delaware, established in the fall of 1990, is an interdisciplinary program within the College of Arts and Sciences. Jewish Studies is a secular, academic discipline that covers Jewish civilization from its ancient Near Eastern origins through its contemporary history and culture in the United States, in Israel and in communities around the world.

Latin American Studies

The Latin American Studies Program offers both a B.A. and a minor designed to prepare undergraduate students for careers as Latin American studies specialists. This interdisciplinary program provides students with comprehensive training in Spanish language and literature as well as Latin American history, politics, geography, anthropology and Portuguese. In addition, all students are encouraged to attend a semester or Winter Session at a Latin American site.
