Scholarship designated for Central American studentsIn the spring of 2002, ELI received the sad news of the passing of Panamanian alumnus Camillo Gonzalez. Camillo died after a long battle with depression, but he is remembered for his courage and hard work which enabled him to graduate from ELI, attend the University of Delaware, and earn a degree from Delaware Technical and Community College. ELI has created a new scholarship in Camillo's memory specifically for students from Central America. The new scholarship will be awarded annually, and potential candidates will be identified by the Scholarship Committee from the pool of general scholarship applicants. In addition to the Institute's 12 general scholarships (available to qualifying students from all countries), this is the third special "named" ELI scholarship which has been made available. The two previous were the David Cardenas Scholarship (Cardenas, from Caracas, Venezuela, died in 1996) and the June R. Quigley Scholarship (created on the occasion of Quigley's retirement from full time service at ELI in 1997). |
