Survey reveals student demographics, motivationsWho studies at the English Language Institute? Where are the students from? Why are they here? These and other questions were explored last summer in a survey conducted by student Claudia Estrada for her Advanced Oral Business class. Using a survey instrument designed by ELI faculty member Russ Mason, Estrada queried 79 students in nine upper-level ELI classes. The data which follow are taken from her research.
Who studies at ELI? While about 35 countries, on the average, are represented at ELI in any given session, during the summer of 2001, citizens of 19 nations responded to the survey. They came from Asia, South and Central America, Africa, Eastern and Western Europe and the Middle East. The largest group came from South Korea, followed by Colombia and Japan. What are students' backgrounds? In the study data, the largest group (33%) was composed of undergraduate students at universities or colleges in their own countries who are taking time off to improve their English. The remainder were university graduates (24%), business professionals (23%), high school graduates (11%) and graduate students (9%). Why do students choose ELI? The largest percentage (a combined total of 46%) gave reasons such as the quality, organization, and reputation of the program and the fact that it was recommended to them. Location and security were cited by 27%, and price and value were contributing factors for 10% of the respondents. What will students do after leaving ELI? Most students will return to their university studies (29%) or jobs (24%) in their own countries. In addition, a significant portion (17%) will apply for admission to graduate schools or MBA programs in the U.S. Another 16% will seek undergraduate admission here. A small portion will seek new jobs, either in the U.S. or in their native countries. As Estrada's research demonstrates, ELI students make up a diverse, talented and highly motivated group. With the communication skills they acquire, their impact will be felt around the world. |
