The Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education

ITUE faculty leaders will present the core of introductory workshops that they have presented to over 450 faculty members from more than 80 institutions throughout the world. ITUE was awarded the prestigious Hesburgh Certificate of Excellence in 1999 for its faculty development program in PBL. ITUE leaders have shared their expertise at numerous institutions in the U.S. and have been invited to present workshops and papers on PBL in undergraduate education at many national conferences. Three ITUE leaders co-edited The Power of Problem-Based Learning and all ITUE leaders wrote several chapters in the book. Institute leaders were also developers of the peer-reviewed electronic clearinghouse of PBL problems and articles (www.udel.edu/pblc) and continue to serve on the editorial board.

ITUE endorses the following principles:

Undergraduate courses should help students

  • think critically and enhance their ability to analyze and solve real world problems
  • develop skill in gathering and evaluating information needed for solving problems
  • gain experience working cooperatively in teams and small groups
  • acquire versatile and effective communication skills

Undergraduate courses should

  • be student centered
  • encourage students to "learn to learn"
  • apply technology effectively where it will enhance learning
  • provide opportunities for a variety of learning experiences
