A Message from the Associate Provost

I hope you enjoy reading the first issue of the University of Delaware Professional Education News. This newsletter is intended to communicate to the University community our successes, advances and efforts to provide the best in professional education characterized by “excellence, uniqueness, impact, and response to societal needs.”

Rooted in theory and research, applied in practice, professional education serves to prepare students for professional leadership in business, industry, the arts, government, or educational, human services, and nonprofit organizations. As the “Citizen University,” we can achieve our greatest impact by educating and training the professionals and leaders who serve society in essential roles, and by closer integration of public service with research and education. Our goal is stated in UD’s Path to Prominence, “We seek both to extend the reach and impact of our professional programs and to reap the benefits for our students and faculty of closer engagement with our society, its needs, and its problem-solvers. The University of Delaware must invest in professional programs and partnerships that provide excellence, uniqueness, impact, and response to societal needs.” Investing in our professionally focused graduate programs is a “Smart Money” investment in skill development and professional earning power.

Please help us prepare for future issues. What questions do you have about professional education? Do you know of students who have held unique internships or conducted impactful or groundbreaking projects? Is there a company or other partner with an interesting or compelling story?

Please send your ideas for feature articles or other comments on the newsletter, to me at sawyerj@UDel.Edu.

John E. Sawyer, Ph.D.
