When hosting a dinner party there are rules of etiquette that The Latimers should practice. Those rules are punctuality, order, neatness, temperance, kindness, generosity, and hospitality. The table manners that had to be followed seem like they would be generally understood, but were commonly stated in books on dining and etiquette.
Mr. Latimer should NOT:
• scratch body
• pick teeth
• leave table before grace
• tuck napkin into clothing
• eat with his knife
• sit too far from the table
Mr. Latimer SHOULD:
• carve meat well
• be able to dance
• always remember names
• seem knowledgeable in conversation
• should fill a ladies glass of wine before his own
