A dinner in the early 19th century was seen as an “opportunity of improvement and social happiness.” Dinners were made up of several courses serving a variety of food from vegetables to meat to dessert.
The Latimers would provide in plenty for their guests and of course give them constant attention to create an enjoyable occasion. The Latimers would have known that geniune hospitality can be in a light, casual manner. The guest should never feel as though they are an inconvenience.
