SITTING ROOM- AN EVENING AT HOME

A Sitting Room during the Federal Period is the equivalent to the Twentieth Century “family room”. Its purpose was to create a warm and inviting feeling to the inhabitants of the household. This was because the Sitting Room was the most frequently used area of the house.

Its function was flexible and often utilized for an assortment of activities. For example, from 1750 to1870, the sitting room often doubled as an informal dining room for breakfast, lunch, etc. (Garrett, 1990.)
