The School of Nursing is suspending admissions to four programs, CNS Pediatrics, CNS Adult/Gerontology, Health Services Administration, and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and their corresponding post-master’s certificate programs. Please note that we are fully committed to students already admitted to these programs and will ensure that they are able to complete their program. The NP programs are still accepting students with a projected application deadline of March 1st 2016, as is our usual procedure. The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program will begin their first cohort in Fall, 2015 and will continue to accept post-master’s applicants through October 1, 2015 for their Fall, 2015 class.
Health Services Administration
The College of Health Sciences and the School of Nursing offer the following Masters programs in Health Services Administration:
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a concentration in Health Services Administration (also available as a post-masters certificate)
- RN to MSN with a concentration in Health Services Administration
All programs are only offered in a totally web-based on-line format.

Program Details
The Health Services Administration Degree (HSAD) programs focus on preparing individuals for management positions in health care organizations. The program is designed to develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to succeed in management positions in healthcare systems, hospitals, long-term care institutions, alternative delivery systems, ambulatory care facilities, managed care organizations, consulting firms, and other health-related organizations.
The broad concepts of health care administration are embedded into the curriculum to help provide the knowledge that is essential for health services administrators. Practica provide students with experiences in a variety of clinical settings, based on the student’s interest and career goals. In addition, students enrolled in the Health Services Administration Degree Program develop leadership and marketing skills, learn how to apply management concepts to healthcare systems, and understand the ethical and legal aspects of healthcare management.
Course work and practica provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills and to integrate knowledge, values, and use of technology from the disciplines of administration, business and/or nursing. To assure the broadest possible experiences, practica are planned at a variety of urban and rural sites in the student’s desired location. RNs in the program must be licensed in the State in which they wish to do their practicum. Graduates are prepared to supervise health care staff members, to analyze care delivery systems, and to develop strategic and tactical management for departments in a variety of healthcare facilities.
Students have completed practica in the following locations: Delmarva Rural Ministries, Institute of Medicine, Delaware Hospital Association, West Side Health, Women’s Health in the Royal Free Hospital at Middlesex University of London, School of Nursing, and the Mayo Clinic.
Student Population
Students entering the HSAD program have work experience from diverse employment environments that include acute care facilities, community agencies, long-term care facilities, episodic care settings, and other healthcare settings.
HSAD Program Admission Requirements
MSN Program
· Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree in nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited school of nursing and Licensure as a registered nurse in Delaware, a compact state, or the state where clinical practice is to be arranged.
RN to MSN Program
· Applicants must have an associate degree or diploma in nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited school of nursing and Licensure as a registered nurse in Delaware, a compact state, or the state where clinical practice is to be arranged. Students are considered MSN students upon completion of 13 credits of the University of Delaware RN to MSN program.
International Students
- International students who hold a license as a Registered Nurse in the United States are eligible to apply to the MSN program.
- Students may choose to complete the program in their home country; practicum placement will be approved on an individual basis and coordinated by the student.

Credits and Clinical Hours
All courses in the program are 3 credits except for NURS 609 Theory & Research, which is 4 credits. The clinical practicum course HSAD/MSN 664 requires students to complete 126 hours in a health care setting. This is a setting that will be identified by the student in his/her area of interest and must be approved by faculty.
Research Course Options
In place of NURS-687 Application of Research, students have the option to take NURS-869 Master’s Thesis (6 credits). Students also have the option to take NURS-868 Scholarly Project (3 credits) in place of NURS-687 Application of Research in Nursing.

Course Schedules
Full Time Students: May complete the MSN HSAD program in 24 months.
Part Time Students: May complete the MSN HSAD program in 36 months.
