Family Nurse Practitioner & Adult Nurse Practitioner Concentrations
Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP) and Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioners (AGNP) are providers of primary health care and assume responsibility for promoting, maintaining, and restoring the health of individuals and families. The Family Nurse Practitioner concentration at the University of Delaware prepares nurses to provide primary health care to persons of all ages. The Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner concentration prepares nurses to provide primary health care to adults that are 18 years of age and older.

Required Nursing Experience
Nurses applying to a Nurse Practitioner concentration must have completed a Bachelor in Nursing Science (BSN) degree. Prior to the students first clinical course they must have completed one year of full time (or the equivalent) work experience as a registered nurse (RN).
On-Campus Hybrid Format
Students can take the following six “Core Graduate Courses” in an on-line format: NURS-604, NURS-609, NURS-621, NURS-622, NURS-687 and EDUC-665. The on-line courses do not require the student to come to campus allowing students to access courses from home or anywhere with a computer and an internet connection.
Students are required to come to campus for the classroom section of all nine clinical courses. The interactive classroom environment provides a critical component for student learning. To decrease the number of trips to campus for students each clinical course only meets on campus for three hours one day a week. To avoid conflicts with student’s personal work schedules and clinical schedules, classes on campus are only scheduled Monday thru Thursday and classes do not start before 3:00 PM.
Full Time Students
Full time students can complete the program in 2.5 years. The recommended full time student course sequence is outlined below for FNP students. The ANP course sequence is the same except that NURS-624 Children’s Health Care is not required.
Part Time Students
Part time students can complete the program in 3.5 years. The recommended part time student course sequence is outlined below for FNP students. The ANP course sequence is the same except that NURS-624 Children’s Health Care is not required.
Credits and Clinical Hours
All courses in the program are 3 credits except for NURS 609 Theory & Research which is 4 credits. The courses marked below with a (CL) are clinical courses that require classroom attendance and also 84 clinical hours to be completed during the semester. Therefore students need to complete 6 hours of clinical time with a preceptor per week during a 14 week semester (14 weeks X 6 hours a week = 84 total clinical hours)
- The FNP program requires a total of 46 credits and 756 clinical hours.
- The AGNP program requires a total of 43 credits and 672 clinical hours.
Research Course Options
In place of NURS-687 Application of Research students have the option to take NURS-869 Master’s Thesis (6 credits) all 6 credits in NURS-869 cannot be taken in the same semester. Students also have the option to take NURS-868 Research Project (3 credits) in place of NURS-687 Application of Research.
