September 14, 2004: Purchase/Download Link for Students Updated; Price Increased.
Due to an oversight, the download link published at the beginning of the semester
still pointed to last year's Student Edition. The link has been fixed on the
Exceed for UD students
page. The Student Edition is now version 10, and the price has increased to $50.
If you accidentally purchased last year's edition in the last two weeks, please
return to the purchase/download site (the URL should be on your receipt page if
you printed it out after completing the transaction) and request a return/refund.
August 30, 2004: Exceed 9 available for faculty/staff and students:
Version 9 of Exceed is now available. Faculty and staff may pick up a copy in
the TSC (room 002B, Smith Hall). Students must purchase a one-year license and
may download the installer on their PCs or come to the RDMS computer lab (room
002C, Smith Hall, next to the TSC) to download and burn the software to a CD-R
(you must provide your own CD-R). See the following links for more details:
Note: the installation procedure is essentially unchanged from last year.
In fact, version 9 differs very little from version 8.
Please review the instructions for installing
and configuring Exceed.
August 22, 2003: Exceed 8.0 available for faculty/staff and students:
Version 8.0 of Exceed is now available for both faculty/staff and students in
the TSC (room 002B, Smith Hall). Students must purchase a one-year license
before obtaining a CD from the TSC. See the following links for more details:
Note: the installation procedure is essentially unchanged from last year.
In fact, version 8 differs very little from version 7.1 except that it's look and
feel has been updated to be more like Windows XP. Please review the instructions
for installing and
configuring Exceed.
August 12, 2002: Exceed 7.1 available for faculty/staff and students:
Version 7.1 of Exceed is now available for both faculty/staff and students in
the TSC (room 002B, Smith Hall). Students must purchase a one-year license
before obtaining a CD from the TSC. See the following links for more details:
Note: the installation procedure has changed somewhat this year, mainly in
that there is no longer a "customized" installer. Please review the instructions
for installing and
configuring Exceed.
September 10, 2001: Notes to Matlab and Mathematica users:
If you follow the instructions for tunnelling X applications through
SSH (see the
how to use Exceed page) and attempt to run
Matlab or Mathematica from the SSH shell, the Exceed server may shut
itself down (the icon disappears from the taskbar or system tray)
and the program windows fail to appear.
This happens because Exceed is configured to shut itself off if the
controlling window is closed, and these programs both open several
short-lived processes, the first of which gets treated as the
controlling window by Exceed. When that process dies, it takes the
Exceed server with it. There are two ways around this problem:
- Type 'xterm' in the SSH shell to open an Xterm window. Run
Matlab or Mathematica from the prompt in the Xterm. This will
make the Xterm the controlling window and prevent the Exceed
server from shutting down (Exceed will shut down if you
close the Xterm window, however). This is the recommended
workaround.
- Run Xconfig from the Exceed program group. Double-click the
"Screen Definitions" icon, click on the "Common Settings" tab,
and uncheck the "Exit on Server Reset" box. This will prevent
Exceed from closing itself down (the server will "respawn" if
the controlling window is closed). This workaround is
not recommended, because it increases the
liklihood that you may accidentally leave processes running
unintentionally on the host system (which will drain resources
and your computing account on Strauss or Mahler).
Mathematica users, also note: in order for Mathematica to
display correctly in Exceed, you must run Xconfig from the Exceed
program group, double-click on the "Font" icon, click the "Font
Database" button, and uncheck the box next to "Automatic
Font Substitution". Note that this may alter the appearance of
other applications.
September 6, 2001: Exceed 7.0 available:
Exceed 7.0 is now available, customized for UD, for faculty/staff
and students. There have been fairly significant changes to the
installation and customization process, so please be sure to read
the documentation. The previous link also leads
to information about obtaining a copy of the UD-customized
installation CD.
Note to students: Exceed Student Edition displays a message
when it starts showing the number of days until the software expires.
The number shown is inaccurate (it implies that the software expires
some time in November 2002), but it will expire correct on August 15,
2002.
March 2, 2001: Exceed 7.0:
Exceed 7.0 is the latest version of Exceed. Due to substantial changes
in the customization process, a customized-for-UD distribution of Exceed
7.0 is not yet available. Faculty and staff who wish to upgrade to
Exceed 7.0 may obtain a copy of the "factory standard" installer CD
under the usual terms (swap a blank CD). Installing version 7.0 "over
top" of a version 6.2 installation will retain all of your user settings,
but the customized icons which were installed by the UD-customized
installer will be lost, and the custom user files that were installed
(for non-XDM connections and setting up the default files in your UNIX
account) will no longer work. Unless you have a specific need to
upgrade to version 7.0 (such as you want to purchase Exceed3D, which
requires v7.0), we recommend staying with version 6.2 until a customized
distribution can be made available (ETA: sometime this summer).
Students who
obtain a 1-year license
for Exceed will now be licensing version 7.0, and students who obtained a
license after August 15, 2000 are eligible to upgrade to version 7.0.
If you are a student and wish to upgrade your current copy of Exceed to
version 7.0, you will need to download the version 7.0 installer from the
same web site where you initially obtained your license (the URL should
be given in the e-mail that you received when you purchased the license).
Please note that the reservations and recommendations in the previous
paragraph also apply to the student edition. Students wishing to obtain
the software on a CD will receive the UD-customized distribution of
Exceed 6.2 (see
obtaining and installing Exceed for more information).
August 21, 2000: 2000-2001 Student Edition:
The Student Edition of Exceed v6.2 for the academic year 2000-2001
(expires August 15th, 2001) is now available for purchase and download
online at
http://www.netsales.net/pk.wcgi/exceed/ for $25. As before,
you may purchase it online and then bring proof of purchase, your
student ID, and a blank CD-R to the TSC in the basement of Smith
Hall and exchange the blank CD-R for a CD with the Exceed software
customized for UD. It's a good idea to call ahead (831-8895) to
ensure that there is a copy waiting for you. For more details, see
Exceed 6.2 for UD: Student
Licenses.
NOTE: If you purchased the Student Edition of Exceed for the
1999-2000 academic year, it will have automatically expired on August
15th and is not usable. You must purchase the Student Edition for
2000-2001 in order to continue using Exceed.
August 21, 2000: Hummingbird Update:
Reminder: Hummingbird routinely makes patches and updates available
via the Hummingbird Update system. It is recommended that you run
Hummingbird Update periodically to ensure that your Exceed software
is fully up-to-date. To run Hummingbird Update, perform the
following steps:
- Make sure that no Exceed applications are running. This includes the
daemon (if it is running, you will see an icon for it in the system
tray).
- If you use dial-up networking to connect to the Internet, connect now.
- Click on the Start button and select "Programs", "Exceed",
"Hummingbird Update".
- Click the "Update Now" button. (Hummingbird Update may first download
an updated version of itself. If it does, Click "OK" when it says it
needs to restart to proceed, and then click the "Update Now" button
again.) Hummingbird Update will now download any updated files and
install them automatically.
- Click "OK" to exit. Your Exceed is now updated. It is a good idea
to reboot after running Hummingbird Update before using Exceed again.
August 21, 2000: Note for Windows 2000 users
The "Create Desktop Icon" shortcut will not work in Windows 2000 because
of that OS's differing file structure. To create a shortcut for Exceed
on your desktop, right-click the icon in the program menu, select "Create
Shortcut", and drag the new icon to the desktop.
May 26, 2000: patch/update for Exceed 6.2 on WIN2K systems:
Hummingbird issued a patch in early April which addreses issues with Exceed
6.2 running on Windows 2000 systems. What issues it addresses, exactly, is
not currently known, but if you are running Exceed 6.2 on a Windows 2000
system and experieincing problems, it is recommended that you install the
patch. More information will be added to this page as it is forthcoming.
IMPORTANT NOTE: the patch only works with version 6.2 of
Exceed (which is the only version supported for Windows 2000, in any case).
If you do NOT have version 6.2, you must upgrade Exceed to this version
before installing the patch. See the instructions at
http://www.udel.edu/topics/connect/sw/exceed for instructions on
how to obtain Exceed 6.2 if you are a University of Delaware student,
faculty or staff member.
The patch is easily installed via the following steps:
If you do not have a "Hummingbird Update" icon, you should still be able
to run the update program manually. The executable is named HCLUPD.EXE,
and should be located in your Exceed.NT folder (usually installed under
Program Files). If you are unable to run the update program or have
further difficulties contact Greg Forte at
gforte@udel.edu, or contact Hummingbird's techincal support directly
at support@hummingbird.com.

March 5, 2000: "Exceed (non-XDM)" icon in NT student edition:
The icon named "Exceed (non-XDM)" in the UD-customized distribution of the
student edition of Exceed 6.2 for Windows NT/2000 is set up incorrectly.
This issue only affects the student edition for Windows NT - the student
edition for Windows 95/98 and the faculty/staff edition (for all platforms)
do not have this problem.
To fix the icon:
- Log in as "administrator" (you must log in with administrator rights,
or you will not be able to make the changes).
- Click on the Start button and select "Find", "Files or Folders".
- Type "(non-xdm)" (without the quote marks) in the "Named" box.
- Click the "Find Now" button.
- When the "Exceed (non-XDM)" icon appears in the list, right-click
on it and select "Properties" from the menu.
- Click on the "Shortcut" tab in the window that appears.
- Change the "Target:" line so that it reads:
"C:\Program Files\Exceed.nt\user\localunix.ses"
(including the quote marks).
- Click the "OK" button.
The icon in the Exceed program group should have changed (no longer looking
the same as the Exceed (XDM) icon). When you select this icon it should now
behave as described in the Using Exceed
documentation.
If you have further difficulty after applying these directions, contact Greg
Forte at gforte@udel.edu.
