Configuring Exceed

The instructions below detail a set of recommended Exceed settings for use at UD. User Services personnel have found these settings to be appropriate for the tasks that Exceed is most commonly used for on campus. These settings may not be entirely suited to your particular requirements, and some of the settings are merely a matter of user preference. Feel free to tinker with your configuration, but keep in mind that if you get into a situation where something doesn't work, reverting to the settings described here is likely to fix the problem.

To configure Exceed, run Xconfig from the Hummingbird Connectivity/Exceed program group and change your settings as described below. Entries preceded by an asterisk (*) require action. Other entries should be set as described if working with a fresh installation. All changes are the same for all versions of Windows. For brevity, the settings below are listed without explanation for the most part - for more information about a specific setting, click the "Help" button under the "Common Actions" on-screen menu on the left side of the XConfig main window.

Note: the categories described below will appear in "Category View", which is the default mode when you first run XConfig. If you prefer to see the settings organized in the same categories as in previous versions of Exceed, click "Switch to Classic View" in the "Common Actions" on-screen menu at the upper left of the XConfig main window (or select it from the "Actions" pull-down menu).

Also note: to save your changes in a category and return to the category list, you must click "Validate and Apply Changes" in the "Common Actions" on-screen menu on the left side of the XConfig main window (or select it from the "Actions" pull-down menu). You can also click "Discard Changes" if you don't want to save your changes, or "Restore to Default Settings" if you want to return to the factory defaults. This is somewhat different from previous versions which had the more classic "OK", "Cancel", and "Default" buttons.

  • Mouse, Keyboard, and Other Input Devices category:
    • Keyboard Input tab:
      • The Primary and Alternate keyboard mappings should be set to "Auto-select" and "us.kbf", respectively, if you chose English during the installation.
      • * Check the box labeled Allow Clients to Modify Keyboard Mapping.
      • The Alt Key should be set to Left to Windows, Right to X.
      • * Set the Windows Key to To Windows.
      • The Shift Key should be set to Map Both Left and Right.
      • Use Keyboard Hook should be checked (but you may need to uncheck it if you are having trouble with certain software such as screen readers).
      • Accept Altered Scancode should be unchecked.
    • Mouse Input tab:
      • * If you have a wheel mouse, and you want the mouse wheel to perform some action in X windows, change the Mouse Wheel setting to Wheel Movement invokes macro. You will then need to click "Macro Bindings" and program macros for the WheelUp and WheelDown events (most likely, you will want them to work as if the PageUp and PageDown keys had been pressed). If you don't have a wheel mouse, or don't care if the wheel works in X windows, then you can leave this option at it's default.
      • The box labeled Middle Button Emulation should be checked. (Note: this option is only useful for two-button mice - it allows you to press both buttons simultaneously to emulate pressing the middle button of a three-button mouse. If you have a three-button or scroll mouse, you can use the middle button or scroll wheel button.) The default Click Interval and Movement Threshold ("100" and "2") are usually ok, but may need to be adjusted if you find you are having trouble clicking both buttons close enough together.
  • Network and Communication category:
    • Communication tab:
      • Select Passive for Mode (which is now the default mode when Exceed is installed. See How to Use Exceed for notes on other modes.)
      • Display number should be set to "0". Changing this setting will not do anything in most cases, and may prevent proper operation in some cases.
    • Transports tab: No changes are necessary.
  • Security, Access Control, and System Administrator category:
    • Security tab:
      • * Select the radio button labeled Enabled (no host access).
      • * Check the box labeled Allow Clients to Modify Host Access Control List.
      • Enable User Access Control List should be unchecked.
      • The settings in the X Web section shouldn't be changed (and are not applicable at any rate, unless you have a web server which supports this feature).
      • Enable Extension should be unchecked.
      • Warn X Client Connection Attempt should be unchecked. (Note: you might want to enable this option if you are not using Exceed via an SSH tunnel. See How to Use Exceed for more details.
    • System Administration tab: no changes are necessary. Note: Do NOT set a password unless you are sure you want to restrict access to Xconfig. If you set a password you will be required to enter it before you can make any configuration changes in the future, and if you forget the password you will have to un-install and re-install Exceed. Setting a password is not recommended on personal computers, unless they are located in a public site.
  • X Server Protocol category:
    • Protocol tab:
      • * Check the box labeled Allow Old X11 Bugs.
      • The two pallette-related entries should be checked (Pad Depth 1 Pixmaps To 32 Bits and Use 32 Bits Per Pixel for True Color).
      • The other boxes should remain unchecked.
    • Extensions tab: no changes are necessary.
  • Display and Video category:
    • Screen 0 tab:
      • The radio button labeled Use All Monitor(s) should be selected, unless you have more than one monitor and want to restrict Exceed to use only one of them at a time.
      • The Window Mode should be set to Multiple. This setting is recommended for most users.
      • Server Visual should be set to Auto Select.
      • The box labeled Panning should be checked, Speed set to Slow and Amount set to 25.
      • The settings for Root Size should be: Width = 0, Height = 0
      • The box labeled Auto Load XRDB should remain unchecked.
      • The Window Manager should be set to Default to Native.
      • The box labeled Use Native WM for Embedded Clients should remain unchecked.
      • * Check the box labeled Fit Window To Display.
      • The box labeled Cascade Windows should be checked.
    • Common Settings tab:
      • The Native Window Manager Focus Policy should be set to Click.
      • The box labeled Enable Server Reset should be checked.
      • * Check the box labeled Exit on Server Reset (UNLESS you will be using Mathematica or Matlab - see addenda).
      • * Uncheck the box labeled Close Warning on Exit.
      • Hide X Server Menu Items should be unchecked.
      • Do Not Prompt for Multiple Sessions should be unchecked.
      • Run Multiple Sessions should be unchecked.
    • Monitor Info tab: no changes are necessary (unless you have multiple monitors).
    • Video tab:
      • * Choose one of the options Specify in mm or Compute Based On Monitor DPI (dots per inch) and then enter the appropriate information. The second option (DPI) is easier if you know your monitor's DPI rating, but may not be as precise as the first option (most monitors have slightly elongated pixels). Unless you are using applications where it will be critical for the aspect ratio (height to width) and/or linear dimensions to be as accurate as possible, these settings are optional.
      • All other default settings in this section are ok.
    • Advanced Settings tab: no changes are necessary.
  • Copy and Paste, and X Selection category:
    • X Selection Associated with Edit Operations should already be set to PRIMARY.
    • AutoCopy X Selection should be checked.
    • * Uncheck the box labeled Copy On Focus Loss.
    • AutoPaste To X Selection should be checked.
    • The Default ("200") setting should be ok for both Grab Clipboard Retry Time and Auto Paste Delay Time.
  • Font Management Category:
    • Font tab:
      • The File: box should read "lfp.xdb". If not, click the "Browse..." button and select that file (unless you have built your own font database).
      • * Click the "Edit..." button. Click "Add Font Server...", type "strauss.udel.edu" for Host, select 7100 for Port, leave Transport on tcp and Status on Load and click "OK" twice.
      • Font Defaults should be "fixed" for Text and "cursor" for Cursor.
    • Advanced Settings tab:
      • Synchronous Operation should be unchecked.
      • The default Timeouts settings ("30" for Read and "5" for Write) are OK.
      • Enable Auto Reopen should be unchecked.
      • Enable Cache should be checked.
      • * Check the box next to Local Fonts First.
      • Default Resolution for scalable fonts should be set to 75.
      • * Uncheck the box next to Automatic Font Substitution.
      • * Check the box next to Optimize for Java VM.
  • Other Server Settings category:
    • Performance tab: no changes are necessary.
    • Troubleshooting tab:
      • * Uncheck the box labeled Enable Log (all boxes should now be unchecked).
    • Power Management tab:
      • * Select always for the Refuse Sleep option.
      • Prevent display from being shut down should be checked.
      • Server reset after critical sleep should be unchecked.
Note: the default Power Management settings will prevent your machine from entering suspend or sleep modes when the Exceed server is running. If you are using Exceed on a laptop, you may want to consider changing these settings, as they may wear down your battery faster. Also bear in mind that if the "Prevent display from being shut down" option is checked then your display will not go to sleep even if you have configured Windows to do so. This may not be desirable if you run Exceed constantly, or in a lab situation where users may unintentionally leave Exceed running when they are finished using a workstation.

Finally, refer to Customizing Your Composers Account and How to Use Exceed to complete the Exceed customization and to help you get started.

For more information, consult the Exceed User's Guide, which is located in the Programs menu under "Hummingbird Connectivity V8.0/Online Documentation" if you chose to install the documentation during installation. If you didn't, you can re-run the installer and choose "add/remove components" to install the documents. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the guide; You can install Acrobat Reader from the Exceed CD (on the "Third Party Add-ons" menu) or download the latest version from Adobe's site.
