Although the members were all African- American, the Ezion Church was under white leadership and by 1813, black members were unhappy. In order to ameliorate the predicament, Peter Spencer, a freed black man from Kent County, MD founded and organized the African Union Methodist Church. Spencer became the leader of the AUMC, and quarterly conferences were established. August quarterlies combined religious meeting with folk festivities; it was a time to celebrate heritage. African-Americans traveled from all over the DELMARVA area and worshipped, celebrated, and prayed together.
