The Latimers lived in a row house at 123 Market street during the time they spent in Wilmington. The house is listed in the 1814 Wilmington census as belonging to Mrs. Latimer, which is slightly unusual, but we are not sure why this is the case. It seems to have been a fairly prestigious neighborhood, because the Latimers lived near the prominent Dr. William Gibbons, and near the Widow Ulman, who was part of a rich family from Strasburg. It was a convenient neighborhood, because the Latimers could do much of their shopping without leaving the block. They could buy dry goods at Flemmings Grocery, and their bonnets from the Johnson sisters. They could buy hats from their neighbor Mr. Mumford, and jewelry from Mr. McConnell who lived across the way. Mr. Latimer may have socialized with the other men in the town at Eli Lamborn’s tavern, which went by various names over the years.
