IT introduces new UD-branded microlink service

// Aug 3, 2010---

Information Technologies has released a new µLink (“microlink”) service to help UD faculty, staff and students communicate complicated URLs to the University and the community.

Most Internet users are familiar with services like TinyURL and bit.ly that shorten long URLs to something more easily shared with others. UD’s µLink service provides that same convenience but with a shortened URL that begins www.udel.edu. Unlike shortened URLs from other services, a µLink refers people to a Web page via a UD-branded identifier.

 If you wish to create a UD µLink for a long URL, follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://www.udel.edu/uLink-request/.
  2. Log in with your UDelNet ID and password.
  3. In the Target URL box, type (or copy and paste) the long URL you wish to shorten. The long URL can refer to any Web page.
  4. Click Submit.
  5. Your UD µLink will be displayed on your computer screen. It will be of the form http://www.udel.edu/yourcode, where “yourcode” will be replaced with a simple, unique numeric address you can share with others.
  6. Make sure you record your µLink. Once created, a UD µLink will remain valid for five years.

For example, using the UD µLink service, we shortened this URL
/it_static/purchase-consulting/special-pricing-agreements
to
http://www.udel.edu/0020.

A major future use of the µLink service will be for UD students and recent graduates to have an easy-to-share, UD-branded URL that can refer to their electronic portfolios.
