Pre-Credit Graduate Tuition Policy (Effective 2013 Fall)

Effective with the 2013-14 academic year, University of Delaware graduate students will be billed by the credit, as approved by the Board of Trustees this spring.

The new structure will provide improved transparency in graduate student tuition rates at UD, allowing the deans of each of the University’s seven colleges to clearly communicate the cost of an entire graduate program. Colleges will continue to have the flexibility, as they do now, to offer tuition scholarships to select graduate students.

Please note that, based on a recent review of active registration in the Spring 2013 semester, this change affects less than 10% of current enrolled graduate students.

What should I do if I think this change will affect me?

The University is committed to ensuring that this policy change does not create an unexpected financial burden for students.  During the upcoming 2013-2014 academic year colleges will be offering scholarships to existing students (admitted by June 2013) to assist with this transition.   Students should contact their colleges for additional information.

Who will be affected by this policy change?
Based on current enrollment statistics, the policy change is expected to affect fewer than 10 percent of graduate students.

Why was this change made?
The previous system encouraged students to schedule more classes during the semester, and larger class loads can have a negative impact on the academic experience. It also meant that the cost of an entire graduate program could vary from student to student, depending on how he or she scheduled courses across terms.

Will this affect my assistantship?
The policy change will not affect students with University-supported assistantships or fellowships, since they are not currently billed on a per-credit basis.

Where can I get more information?

Approved rates for graduate student tuition and fees for the 2013-2014 academic year will be officially published in early July 2013. Look for additional information to be announced at that time.
