Hilary Kerchner Wins ACS Division of Organic Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research FellowshipPhoto Courtesy of Mary Watson Hilary Kerchner, a junior Chemistry major and researcher in Prof. Mary Watson's group, (Professor Mary Watson's group), is the recipient of a 2012 ACS Division of Organic Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). This award will support Hilary's research on the development of new catalytic asymmetric methods for organic synthesis. These fellowships are awarded nationally based on a student's research proposal, academic record, faculty recommendations and passion for laboratory science. Individuals are provided with $5000 support to carry out independent research projects between their junior and senior years. Derek Ahneman (in Professor Donald Watson's group) was awarded this fellowship in 2011. Since only 14–16 of these fellowships are awarded nationally each year, two awards in as many consecutive years speaks volumes about the quality of research, faculty and students at the University of Delaware's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. In addition to the $5000 fellowship, the program provides financial support to enable recipients to visit an industrial campus in the fall for a dinner, award session, scientific talks, a tour of the campus and a poster session, where the results of the summer research investigations will be presented. |
