Conclusion

The wealth of potential drugs have two potential sources: either from the rainforest or from the laboratory.  We hold that the future of drug discovery lies in neither of these options alone, rather it embodies both the rainforest and the laboratory.  Combinatorial laboratory techniques, though relatively a recent trend, is growing in efficiency with support from pharmaceutical companies.  And as the combinatorial libraries grow, the ability to quickly synthesize derivatives of a biologially active compound increases.  But even with this technology, there cannot be a substitution for the biodiversity that can be found within the boundaries of the rainforest.
