We hold that the future of drug discovery lies in neither of these options alone, rather it embodies both the rainforest and the laboratory. Combinatorial laboratory techniques, though relatively a recent trend, is growing in efficiency with support from pharmaceutical companies. And as the combinatorial libraries grow, the ability to quickly synthesize derivatives of a biologially active compound increases. But even with this technology, there cannot be a substitution for the biodiversity that can be found within the boundaries of the rainforest.
