Value describes form through light. Value can also be expressive--a literal representation of a subject is not necessarily always the desired intention of a drawing.

Consider the keys of a piano: how many octaves are there? Does a pianist use every octave in every composition? What happens if she only uses the octave to the far right of the keys? |

Examine the range of values used in each of the above drawings. Refer to the gray scale at the top of the page-- which values from the scale does each use? What is the result of using selective values as opposed to a full range?
