Value II

Value describes form through light. Value can also be expressive--a literal representation of a subject is not necessarily always the desired intention of a drawing.

Rather than use a full range of values, what happens when we just use a section of our gray scale?

Do these pears use a full range of values?

Consider the keys of a piano: how many octaves are there? Does a pianist use every octave in every composition? What happens if she only uses the octave to the far right of the keys?

Examine the range of values used in each of the above drawings. Refer to the gray scale at the top of the page-- which values from the scale does each use? What is the result of using selective values as opposed to a full range?
