SPSS: Windows 3.1 Version - Download Options
The entire site licensed SPSS package is composed of files from 10
diskettes. To simplify the distribution on the University of Delaware
campus, each of the diskettes' files were put into a compressed self-extracting
format for downloading via a Web browser such as Netscape.
This document assumes that you have
already read
SPSS: Site
Licensed Program, University of Delaware
and have agreed to abide by the contract with SPSS Inc.
If you have not read the agreement
and registered your use of the software
you must do it before proceeding.
This document describes how to download the software
to your hard disk and how to download the software
to floppy diskettes. The hard disk approach is preferable if
you have sufficient free disk space. If your system is not connected
to the campus network, you may bring 10 diskettes to a public microcomputing
site or to the Technology Solutions Center in 002 Smith Hall and copy the
files to diskettes in that location.
You may find it easier to print these
instructions before performing the downloading.
Downloading the software to your hard disk
The goal is to retrieve the original SPSS installation files into
a new temporary installation folder on your hard disk. Depending on how
your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) is configured, the browser
will take one of two actions:
- The browser may have you store a self-extracting compressed (.EXE)
file in a temporary directory named C:\SPSSTEMP. If that happens,
you will later need to follow the instructions below to extract the actual
files used for the SPSS installation.
- The browser may instead extract the files as the downloading process
occurs, and store the actual files used for the SPSS installation
in a directory named C:\SPSSTEMP.
In either case, first create a directory named
C:\SPSSTEMP .
- Start the download of the self-extracting compressed file WIN31.EXE
(11.3 Mbytes) by clicking on its name. Depending on your browser's
configuration, you will save the WIN31.EXE file in the C:\SPSSTEMP
directory or automatically extract the contents of WIN31.EXE and
store the resulting collection of files in the C:\SPSSTEMP directory.
If you are given a choice to save or to open the downloading
file, select open.
- In the former case (i.e., save file), go to the Windows
Menu Bar, and select File / Run. Type C:\SPSSTEMP\WIN31.EXE and
select OK. When the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window
appears, click on Unzip. The resulting files will be stored
in the C:\SPSSTEMP directory. Close the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window,
and delete the WIN31.EXE file from the C:\SPSSTEMP directory.
- In the latter case (i.e., open file), the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window
will appear. Click on Unzip. The resulting files will be stored
in the C:\SPSSTEMP directory. Close the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window.
Installing the software stored temporarily on your hard disk
If you have filled in the SPSS registration
form, you will be receiving a copy of the printed installation instructions
and customized license codes. To install the SPSS program, follow
these printed instructions. The installation process
will have you check boxes to indicate which SPSS modules you are installing.
You have the Base System, Professional Statistics, and Advanced Statistics modules.
Downloading the software to floppy diskettes
You will need 10 formatted high-density (1.44 Mbytes) diskettes
for this procedure. You will be downloading 10 files and transferring their
contents to these diskettes.
- Create a folder named C:\SPSSTEMP on your hard disk.
- Your Web browser may have you store each self-extracting compressed
(.EXE) file in a temporary directory named C:\SPSSTEMP. If that
happens, you will later need to follow the instructions below to extract
the actual files used for the SPSS installation. The extracted files will
be saved on the floppy diskette.
- The browser may instead extract the files as the downloading process
occurs, and directly store the actual files used for the SPSS installation
on the floppy diskette.
For each file in the list below, repeat the complete
set of instructions on that file before starting the next file.
- Put a formatted high-density (1.44 Mbytes) diskette in the disk drive.
- Click on a filename in the list below to start downloading the file
.
- Depending on your browser's configuration, you will save the downloading
file in the C:\SPSSTEMP directory, or automatically extract the
contents of the file and store the resulting collection of extracted files
on your floppy diskette. If you are given a choice to save or to
open the downloading file, select open.
- In the former case (i.e., save file), go to the Windows
Menu Bar, and select File / Run. Type C:\SPSSTEMP\filename
(where filename is the name of the file you downloaded, such
as DISK1.EXE) and select OK. When the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window
appears, click on Unzip. The resulting files will be stored
automatically on your A: drive. Close the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window,
and delete the downloaded .EXE file from the C:\SPSSTEMP directory.
- In the latter case (i.e., open file), the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window
will appear. Click on Unzip. The resulting files will be stored
automatically on your A: drive. Close the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window.
Installing the software from floppy diskettes
If you have filled in the SPSS registration
form, you will be receiving a copy of the printed installation instructions
and customized license codes. To install the SPSS program, put
the Disk1 diskette in the diskette drive. The installation
process will have you check boxes to indicate which SPSS modules you
are installing. You the Base System, Professional Statistics,
and Advanced Statistics modules.
