General Information

Meeting times: Spring, 1998, TR 3:30-4:45 in ShL 130
Instructor: Maurice Barnhill
- Office: Sharp Lab 224.
  Enter Sharp Lab from the mall, come up the stairs, and turn right. My office is on the right where the hall takes a jog to the left, opposite the Commons Room. If the door is open, I am in the building somewhere. Check for notes.

Feedback:
Classes vary, and I am experimenting with "delivery techniques," so I need to hear from you about how well things are going if I am to do as good a job with the class as I want to do. There are several ways you can keep me informed:

Minute Paper Box:
I will keep a cardboard box at the front of the room. If you have a comment or question about a day's class, or have a general comment to make, just write it down and leave it in the box. I will address everything I receive, whenever possible at the beginning of the next class. If you sign it, I can give you credit for your brilliance. If you weren't brilliant, I won't mention your name. If you forget to sign it, even deliberately, I won't be offended. Occasionally I may ask all of you at the end of a class to spend a minute or two writing something about your reaction to the class. Grading
Course grades will be based on two midterm examinations (30% each), a few assignments (15%), and a final examination (25%).

Deadlines:
You are expected to meet all deadlines unless you have a good excuse, which you should tell me about in advance if at all possible. Ordinarily, make-up exams will be oral exams.
Honesty:
Be sure you have read the statement on Student Rights and Responsibilities in the Official Student Handbook. You should never, in any way, present another person's work as your own, and you should always reference your sources for information that you present. In this class, and this class only, it is OK to include in a list of references work that you know to be useful but which you have not read, provided that you do not in some way imply that you have read it. You must, therefore, be extra careful to say specifically when and where you have used material from your list of references. You should always use quotes when using the exact language of another person. In any case of doubt about how to handle sources, ask me.
