Field Trips

Five Field Trips are in the final stages of planning. You will have to choose among:

  1. Carbonates of the York, Pennsylvania Area - Leader: Dr. Bill Kreiger, York College of Pennsylvania, York, PA. Participants will have an opportunity to examine several large limestones quarries, collect samples and understand the action of ground water in a limestone region.

  2. Geology of the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Area - Leader: Mr. Wallace White, Owing Mills, MD. Participants will see the connection between the infamous Civil War battle (or the War for Southern Independence for our Virginia friends) and the geology of the Gettysburg area.

  3. Miocene Fossils of the Calvert Cliffs, Maryland Area - Leader: To Be Determined. Collect Miocene fossils from one of the most famous sites in North America - on the shore of and in the shallow waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

  4. Progressive Metamorphism of the Tri-State District (Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland) - Leader: Dr. Alan Thompson, University of Delaware, Newark, DE. Collect samples and photograph the habits of rocks in various metamorphic stages and examine the possible causes for the metamorphism.

  5. Geo-Secrets of the Baltimore, Maryland Area - Leader: Jim O'Conner, University of the District of Columbia, Washington, DC. Study the building stones of Baltimore, some geologic aspects of Fort McHenry, and a view of the oceanography of Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
