HONORING THE CLASS COUPLE
Tom Schonauer, AS62, and Betty Jane Howe, AS62, were class sweethearts. Well-known and well- liked,
they were quintessential “Double Dels,” long before
the phrase existed. In 1963 Tom, a varsity basketball player and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity member, and Betty, the class valedictorian, working as an instructor at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, married, as Tom pursued his medical education at Jefferson Medical College. The Schonauers eventually settled in York, Pa. and raised a family of three daughters and a son. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013. Sadly, Tom was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and died in January 2014.
In 2015, a former classmate and friend anonymously established the Schonauer Scholarship in Tom’s memory and Betty’s honor. This endowed scholarship is awarded to students who emulate Tom and Betty’s journey to the University of Delaware from out of state to pursue careers in the medical field.
The Class of 1962 invites their classmates to contribute to the Schonauer Scholarship by making contributions to: University of Delaware, Gifts Processing, 83 E. Main St., 3rd Fl., Newark, DE 19716. Checks can be made to the ‘University of Delaware,’ with a note on the memo line that says, ‘Schonauer Scholarship.’ Gifts can also be made on the University of Delaware’s secure website, www.udel.edu/makeagift. z
