Cognos Incorporated provides business intelligence software that allows advanced analysis and reporting across the University. The University has purchased several Cognos packages.
ReportNet is a web-based reporting program that allows any authorized user to generate a report at any time using only a web browser. It includes a self-service tool that creates reports using a drag-and-drop feature. It can join tables from multiple databases and create reports that can be made available on the web with proper security. ReportNet can create reports from databases such as PeopleSoft and SQL.
A second Cognos package, DecisionStream is an ETL (extraction, transformation, and load) tool. It extracts from one or more data sources and transforms that data to make it more suitable for reporting. It then loads the data into new structures for report building.
Finally, PowerPlay, online analytical processing software, draws information from relational databases and builds datasets that can be analyzed quickly and accessed on the web or through Microsoft Excel.
A Cognos software user can access multiple reports from a single web page through a a simple, easy-to-use web interface that also allows you to "drill down" to the details of each report. Reports can be delivered in many ways, including on the web, through e-mail and formatted for printing.
