Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Founded by the renowned UD faculty violinist Xiang Gao and erhu virtuoso Cathy Yang, the Delaware-based 6ixwire ensemble aims to bring Eastern and Western cultures together in creative concert productions that celebrate diversity while transforming the way classical music is experienced.

The ensemble has performed worldwide at major concert halls and international events, including a recent performance at the National Committee for U.S. China Relations gala in New York City, where it was introduced by Henry Kissinger.

In May, 6ixwire was awarded a prestigious grant by the nonprofit Chamber Music America, in support of a new expanded outreach program that aims to serve people who otherwise may not be able to attend a classical music concert.

This outreach program, co-presented by the Master Players Concert Series, sends 6ixwire to perform 15 free concerts at local community centers, including schools, medical facilities, senior centers and libraries, to promote new chamber music and to bring music to underserved communities in the region.

Gao, who is also the Trustees Distinguished Professor of Music at UD, is recognized as one of the world's most successful multifaceted artists of his generation from China.

Yang, an internationally acclaimed erhu virtuoso, is also a guzheng (Chinese zither) soloist and a former professor of music at the China Contemporary Cultural Academy.
