May 13: Ice cream for the Earth
DENIN Ambassadors to scoop free UDairy ice cream for the UD community
(Editor's note: Due to the Friday weather forecast, the "Ice Cream for Earth" event is being moved indoors to the atrium of the Harker Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory.)
3:04 p.m., May 10, 2016--The Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) Ambassadors will be scooping UDairy Creamery ice cream cones on Friday, May 13, in the atrium of the Harker Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory. Free ice cream will be provided between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. or while supplies last.
The annual “Ice Cream for the Earth” event is a fun way to get students to think about the natural environment, says senior Marisa Andreazza, co-chair of the DENIN Ambassadors.

“As students are waiting for their ice cream, we ask them the question ‘Why do you scream for the Earth?’ and record their answers on a whiteboard,” she says. “Then we take a photo to post on DENIN’s Facebook page. Answers in the past have been quite diverse.”
The featured ice cream will be “DENIN Dirt,” a custom flavor created for DENIN to mark the United Nations’ International Year of Soils in 2015. It consists of chocolate ice cream with Oreo cookie crumbs and gummy worms mixed in.
The event aims to create a stress-relieving break at a busy time of year, as well as to leave an impression on those who partake and inspire appreciation for the planet that produces cows, sugar cane and cacao, among other marvels.
“It's pretty awesome to hear what people particularly cherish in the natural world,” Andreazza says. “One of my favorite answers last year was, ‘I scream for the Earth, because the Earth can't scream for herself.’”
