June 6-9: Food and culture series
The event will be the first of it’s kind in that Mock will be the first trans* woman of color to speak at UD, a Haven representative said, adding that she has worked consistently on issues surrounding trans* identity, intersectionality and violence against women.
Her perspective and experience is “truly remarkable and eye opening,” the Haven representative said.
Mock, the author of Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love and So Much More, will be available for a meet and greet following the event. Copies of her book are available for purchase at the event and at the Barnes and Noble University of Delaware Bookstore for $22.50. Cash, credit/debit cards or checks can be used for purchase.
The book tells a story of Mock’s experience growing up as a trans girl and celebrates self-actualization and self-love. Her memoir, the first from a young trans woman, debuted on The New York Times best seller list.
After publicly proclaiming her identity as a trans woman in a 2011 profile in Marie Claire magazine, Mock focused her efforts on speaking about the struggles, triumphs and portrayals of girls and women like herself.
In 2012, she launched #GirlsLikeUs, a movement that encourages trans women to live visibly. She currently writes and speaks about her experience of living at the intersections of identities.
Haven, the University’s only LGBTQ registered student organization, has multiple cosponsors helping contribute to the success of the event including Student Centers Programming Advisory Council, the Student Government Association, LGBT Faculty/Staff Caucus, the Division of Student Life, the Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity, Residence Life and Housing, the Office of Equity and Inclusion and the Ally Network, the Center for Black Culture, and the Blue Hen Leadership Program.
