UD musicians advance to the live semi-final round of National Trumpet Competition

4:55 p.m., March 16, 2015--Members of the University of Delaware Trumpet Quintet, under the direction of Department of Music faculty member Robert Skoniczin, have advanced to the live, semi-final round of the National Trumpet Competition (NTC), scheduled March 19-21 at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.  

The quintet, whose members are Casey Hesse, Evan Roberts, Charlene Bottjer, Mike Carr and Matthew Hubner, will play the Erik Morales piece Metallic Fury, which features trumpets, flugelhorns and piccolo trumpet.

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

In addition to the trumpet ensemble competition, Hesse was selected to compete in the graduate solo division. She will be playing the first movement of Oskar Böhme's Concerto in F Minor.

The UD community can enjoy a preview of Metallic Fury at the Symphonic Band concert, scheduled at 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, in the Loudis Recital Hall in the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. The program, An Irish Spring, also features Leroy Anderson’s The Irish Washerwoman and Percy Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry and is directed by Heidi I. Sarver. 

Inaugurated in 1992, the National Trumpet Competition has provided performing opportunities, master classes, exhibition concerts, historic and commercial exhibits and an educational, supportive environment for nearly 3,000 students. To date, these students have represented 40 states as well six foreign countries. 

Nearly 100 artist faculty members coming from universities and symphony orchestras around the nation donate their time and talents to judge these young players. Artists are chosen from among many of the trumpet world's greatest performers, and NTC audiences have been inspired by performances of Canadian Brass, Grammy Award-winner Arturo Sandoval, Maynard Ferguson, Phil Smith, Tim Morrison, Jens Lindemann, Allen Vizzutti and a host of others, many of whom waive their fees to support NTC.
