UD's Courtyard Newark to host Main Street Mile 'Battle' benefit

10:01 a.m., Aug. 6, 2014--The Courtyard Newark at the University of Delaware campus hotel will host a Main Street Mile “Battle of the Bars” benefit event from 5-8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 15.

The event benefits the Newark Police Department K-9 unit. It will feature guest bartenders from four local restaurants – Grotto Pizza, the Deer Park Tavern, Catherine Rooney’s and Taverna, the 2013 winner – who will compete for the Paco Cup, which is named in honor of the first police dog on the city force.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

For the second year, a bartender skills contest -- hosted by Simon Hewson of Kildare's -- will be held as part of the event.

All tips will be donated to support the K-9 fund.

There also will be live music throughout the evening.

The “Battle of the Bars” is sponsored by the Downtown Newark Partnership, of which UD is a member, Fusion Fitness Center, Kildare’s, Standard Distributing Co. and United Distributors of Delaware.
