Weinberg Center to host corporate governance speaker series, panel


11:11 a.m., Sept. 30, 2013--The John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware will host its Distinguished Speaker Series as well as a panel on “The Role of the Outside Director in the Controlled Corporation” from 9 a.m.-noon, Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts on UD’s Newark campus.

William Lauder, executive chairman of the Estee Lauder Companies Inc., a global leader in prestige beauty, will join the center as one of the distinguished speakers in a conversation with Charles Elson, director of the Weinberg Center, about corporate governance in a controlled company.

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The panel, which will run from 10 a.m.-noon, will focus on how directors of controlled corporations can most effectively carry out their fiduciary duties and the governance of a controlled corporation. The panel will include Lauder and:

  • Stephen L. Brown, senior director, corporate governance, TIAA-CREF;
  • William C. Crowley, cofounder and CEO, Ashe Capital Partners, LLC; former director, AutoNation, AutoZone and Sears Holding;
  • Viet Dinh, professor, Georgetown University Law Center, and founding partner, Bancroft PLLC; director of News Corporation and Revlon, Inc.;
  • Jay W. Eisenhofer, managing director, Grant and Eisenhofer, P.A.;
  • Robert J. Giuffa Jr., partner, Sullivan and Cromwell;
  • J. Travis Laster, vice chancellor, Delaware Court of Chancery;
  • Jerry W. Levin, chairman and CEO, J.W. Levin Partners LLC, and chairman and CEO, Wilton Brands, Inc.; former CEO of Revlon, Inc., the Coleman Company, and American Household, Inc. (formerly Sunbeam);
  • Thomas Pike, CEO, Quintiles; and
  • Paul (Tim) Thompson III, senior managing director, GLC Advisors and Co.

Elson, who is also Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair in Corporate Governance, will moderate the panel.

A complementary buffet lunch will follow the program.

There is no charge for the program but as space is limited, anyone who plans to attend should register online by Oct. 14.

Materials and additional information will be forwarded in advance of the panel. Where applicable, Delaware continuing legal education (CLE) credits will be provided.
