UD Chinese Students and Scholars Association hosts annual singing competition

8:56 a.m., Oct. 11, 2013--The University of Delaware Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA), a graduate student organization on campus, will hold its annual singing competition, “Voice of UD,” from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, in the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. 

Inspired by the popular American television show The Voice, CSSA began its own college version of the singing competition on campus in 2001. The singing competition provides students with a stage to showcase their talents and share their favorite Chinese songs.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The theme of this year’s competition, “Sing Your Story,” encourages participants to choose personally meaningful songs. 

Any student that can sing in Chinese is invited to tryout for the competition on Friday, Oct. 11, from 6-9 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 12, from 1:30-2:30 p.m.,  in 116 Brown Hall. Participants are expected to sing a prepared piece that is one to two minutes in length.

The final 16 candidates selected from round one will move on to the final round of the competition on Oct. 26. Judges will whittle down the contestants and the audience will vote to help determine the winner of the “Voice of UD.” 

“It’s a pure vocal competition, participants will tell their own stories with their voices,” said Chengyi Han, president of CSSA. “People come to have fun and interact with one another, the prizes are just bonus.”

The CSSA invites all students, even those unfamiliar with the Chinese language, to come enjoy the show and to learn more about Chinese culture. In addition to the competition, the night will also feature games, prizes and a performance by the UD Dragonfly Dance Club.  

“We are trying to get more students involved from different backgrounds because we consider this to be a part of our mission as a culture diversity group,” said Han.
