9:41 a.m., Oct. 7, 2013--The polarized political climate in the United States has resulted in a government shutdown while the opposing viewpoints seem incapable of the civil dialogue and communication needed to work together effectively.

On Thursday, Oct. 10, the University of Delaware Department of Communication will host an expert speaker on civility and communication.

Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Joseph Valenzano III of the University of Dayton will present  “Civility, Disagreement, and Political Communication” at 6 p.m. in 140 Smith Hall.

Sponsored by the Department of Communication with support from Fountainhead Press publishing company, the event is free and open to the public.

Students may feel distant from the events in Washington, D.C., here in Delaware.  However, every citizen should be aware that the absence of civil communication and democratic deliberation is affecting the entire nation – and demonstrating that communication skills are essential in every realm of life.

“The ability to engage effectively with others and civilly discuss differences is at the heart of leadership, achievement, and communication,” said Tracey Holden, assistant professor of communication. “We’re fortunate that Dr. Valenzano’s expertise in this area is scheduled at such a timely moment. His presentation to our students can both inform our students and illuminate the challenges of civic engagement and public politics in today’s polarized communication climate.”
