Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

With volunteer stylists and donations from New Trend Hair Salon, students and the University community can donate 8 inches of hair to make a wig. Alternately, for a small donation, participants can get a haircut at any length or have a strip of hair dyed.

“Hair for Hope was an event I started last year in the Harrington complex with fellow resident assistant C.J. Burke,” said Cahill, a history education major and student engagement adviser with UD Residence Life and Housing. “Last year, we raised $500 for the B+ Foundation. This year, we have expanded the event to the public and worked with WSTW, 93.7 and Kia of Wilmington to co-sponsor the event.”

Co-sponsors WSTW and Kia of Wilmington are assisting with promotion of the event and are providing donations of prizes for participants.

“The Hair for Hope event is so special because the UD students come together to raise money, raise awareness, and donate hair so that kids with cancer can have wigs,” said Joe McDonough, president of the Andrew McDonough B+ (Be Positive) Foundation.

The B+ Foundation funds cutting edge childhood cancer research and is now one of the largest grantors of financial assistance to families of kids with cancer in the country.

“Cancer is a hard topic with many,” said Cahill. “So I wanted an event that was fun but rewarding. I also saw that events were not being attended because the students didn't understand or see how they help children with cancer. Hair for Hope was created so that students are able to realize that they can have a direct impact.”

As a student engagement adviser (SEA), Cahill is charged with serving as a floor-level resident assistant, and as a staff peer adviser who leads initiatives that heighten student engagement.

SEAs also work with other resident assistants (RAs) to identify student strengths and talents toward the goal of helping students become active members of the residence hall and UD community and creating and maintaining environments that promote and celebrate student contributions.
