Born in South Africa in 1950, Gilder went into exile in 1976, composed and sang songs at anti-apartheid events in Europe and elsewhere, and served in the African National Congress' intelligence structures when he returned to South Africa in 1991. He later became deputy head of the South African Secret Service.
He is a fellow of the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection, a policy think tank set up by former senior leaders in the democratic government. In addition, he recently was appointed as a senior research fellow in the University of Witwatersrand's Graduate School of Public and Development Management.
In his compelling and frank memoir, Gilder describes ANC's military camps in Angola, his trips to Moscow for spycraft training and his leadership positions in the new government. The book explores the personal, political, psychological and historical realities that gave birth to the new South Africa.
